The Council is made up of the three committees listed below. This framework is modeled after STARS, a program of AASHE, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, of which NMSU is a member. For more information about these committees, please see the Council Business Plan.
Education and Research (ER)
This committee will ensure that sustainability is infused throughout curriculum and co-curriculum to give each graduate of NMSU multiple perspectives for dealing with sustainability-related challenges. The ER committee will also work to identify and support sustainability-related research by NMSU faculty.
This committee has a large role in greening all NMSU campuses. Some of the sustainability goals include involvement in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and xeriscaping efforts; participation in cutting energy costs by metering the mechanical systems in buildings across the state; switching out incandescent lamps with LED’s, and purchasing Energy Star® appliances.
Planning Administration and Engagement (PAE)
This committee works to institutionalize sustainability at NMSU through sustainability coordination, incorporating sustainability into campus plans, and developing further plans to move toward sustainability. PAE will help NMSU organize, implement, and publicize sustainability initiatives, providing the infrastructure that fosters sustainability within an institution.
The Sustainability Council is comprised of students, faculty, staff, administration, and community members. The Council meetings are used to educate these constituents on sustainability issues and to develop innovative programs that will help NMSU manage its environmental impact.
